Ayurvedic Approach for Psychological Disorders
In Ayurveda, psychological disorders are referred to as “Unmadha,” a term that signifies a scattered or disturbed mind. Unlike the allopathic approach, which often relies on psychotropic medications and psychotherapy, Ayurveda adopts a holistic methodology. It emphasises the interconnected balance of mind, body, and spirit, aiming to address root causes and restore harmony rather than merely alleviating symptoms.
According to Ayurvedic principles, physical health is governed by the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—while the mind and consciousness are influenced by the three Gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Imbalances in these fundamental elements can lead to psychological disturbances, manifesting as conditions like depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and general stress disorders.
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on restoring balance through a personalised understanding of an individual’s constitution (Prakriti) and its impact on the mind. This process often involves Prashna (a form of talking therapy) to explore root causes, alongside natural remedies, lifestyle modifications, and dietary adjustments. Such an integrated approach supports the body’s innate healing capabilities.
Therapies like Shirodhara, in which warm herbal oils are poured continuously over the forehead, help calm the mind and stabilise emotions. Herbal formulations such as Brahmi, Ashwagandha, and Guggulu are widely used to nourish the nervous system and enhance mental clarity. Panchakarma, a full detoxification therapy, is also recommended to cleanse the body of toxins that may impair mental health.
