Understanding Nervous System Disorders Through Ayurveda – Causes, Treatments and Remedies

A person receiving a back oil massage

Are you living with persistent discomfort from conditions like back pain, neck pain, sciatica, or stiff joints that limit your daily movement? It is common to feel frustrated when these physical challenges interrupt your life, especially if you are searching for a solution that offers long-term relief. These nervous system disorders affect the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves, leading to a variety of symptoms such as pain, weakness and loss of function. Ayurveda provides a clear perspective on such conditions by identifying how imbalances in your internal energy can lead to nerve and joint distress.  In this guide, we will explore how natural therapies and targeted lifestyle changes can help you manage symptoms that arise as a result of nervous system disorders.

Causes of Nervous System Disorders – An Ayurvedic Perspective

Understanding Nervous System Disorders Through Ayurveda - Causes, Treatments And Remedies - The Ayurvedic Clinic

According to Ayurveda, the human body is governed by three doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These are energies that regulate different physiological functions, and an imbalance is believed to be the root cause of various diseases, including those affecting the nervous system. Vata is the primary dosha that governs movement, dryness and the nervous system, and when disturbed, it can lead to symptoms such as pain and stiffness associated with nervous system disorders.

In addition to dosha imbalances, the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body can further disrupt the nervous system. Ama typically results from poor digestion or irregular lifestyle habits. It can accumulate in the joints, muscles and nerves, leading to inflammation, swelling and pain, exacerbating any underlying conditions or injuries.

Common Nervous System Disorders and Ayurvedic Treatments

Back Pain (Kati Shula)

Back pain, known in Ayurveda as Kati Shula, is primarily caused by an imbalance in the Vata and Kapha doshas. The Vata dosha, which governs movement and dryness, when aggravated, can lead to pain and stiffness in the lower back. This condition often results from factors such as excessive physical activity, prolonged sitting, or exposure to cold weather, which aggravates Vata. Additionally, the accumulation of Ama (toxins) can further hinder circulation, causing discomfort.

Symptoms

  • Lower back pain
  • Stiffness and dryness in the affected area
  • Pain worsening with cold or after prolonged sitting
Treatments

  • Herbal remedies to reduce inflammation and strengthen the back
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) to alleviate discomfort
  • Dietary changes to improve digestion and eliminate Ama

Neck Pain (Greeva Shula)

Neck pain, also called Greeva Shula, is linked to an imbalance in the Vata dosha, which controls movement and nervous system function. When Vata is aggravated, it leads to dryness, stiffness and pain in the neck, which can radiate to the shoulders, arms and head. Poor posture, excessive physical exertion and exposure to cold are common contributing factors.

Symptoms

  • Stiffness and pain in the neck
  • Limited range of motion
  • Pain radiating to the shoulders, arms, or head
Treatments

  • Herbal treatments to reduce inflammation and enhance circulation
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) for pain relief
  • Lifestyle modifications to prevent further imbalances in Vata

Sciatica (Gridhrasi)

Sciatica, or Gridhrasi in Ayurveda, is characterised by radiating pain along the sciatic nerve, from the lower back through the hips and legs. This condition is commonly caused by an imbalance in the Vata dosha, particularly Apana Vata, which governs downward movement in the body. Poor posture, excessive physical activity, or an unhealthy lifestyle can exacerbate the condition.

Symptoms

  • Pain radiating along the sciatic nerve
  • Pain extending from the lower back to the buttocks and legs
  • Numbness or tingling in the affected leg
Treatments

  • Herbal remedies to reduce inflammation and support the nervous system
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) to improve circulation
  • Lifestyle and dietary changes to balance Vata and reduce toxins

Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow, a condition resulting from repetitive strain on the elbow tendons, is closely associated with an aggravated Vata dosha in Ayurveda. Overuse of the forearm muscles, whether in sports or manual labour, leads to inflammation and pain in the elbow region. The imbalance disrupts musculoskeletal function and impedes the body’s natural healing processes.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness on the outer elbow
  • Difficulty extending the arm
  • Swelling and degeneration of the tendons
Treatments

  • Herbal formulations such as Ashwagandha and Boswellia for inflammation relief
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) with medicated oils for tissue repair
  • Localised fomentation to improve circulation and ease pain
  • Dietary changes to support musculoskeletal health and balance Vata

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused by the compression of the median nerve at the wrist, resulting in numbness, tingling and pain in the hand. In Ayurveda, it is linked to an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system. Repetitive hand movements, such as typing or gripping, aggravate Vata and contribute to the condition’s development.

Symptoms

  • Numbness and tingling in the hand and fingers
  • Weakness in the hand, especially the thumb and index fingers
  • Sharp or shooting pain in the wrist or hand
Treatments

  • Herbal remedies to reduce inflammation and nourish the nervous system
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) to enhance circulation and relieve pain
  • Fomentation to reduce swelling in the wrist
  • Lifestyle modifications to prevent further Vata imbalance

Cervical Spondylosis (Greeva Sandhigata Vata)

Cervical spondylosis, a degenerative condition affecting the cervical spine, is associated with the Vata dosha. It typically manifests as neck stiffness, pain and reduced mobility. The condition results from the degeneration of the intervertebral discs and joints in the neck. Factors such as ageing, poor posture and Vata imbalance contribute to its development.

Symptoms

  • Pain and stiffness in the neck
  • Difficulty moving the neck or turning the head
  • Cracking or grinding sensations in the neck
Treatments

  • Herbal formulations to strengthen the joints and improve circulation
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) to relieve stiffness
  • Dietary changes to balance Vata and promote joint health
  • Ayurvedic therapies to restore dosha balance and support overall well-being

Fibromyalgia (Vatavyadhi/ Mamsagata Vata)

Fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain and fatigue, is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the Vata dosha in Ayurveda. The condition affects the muscles and joints, often accompanied by sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal issues. Ayurveda treats fibromyalgia as a systemic disorder that requires a holistic approach to address both the body and mind.

Symptoms

  • Widespread musculoskeletal pain
  • Generalised weakness and fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances and headaches
Treatments

  • Herbal formulations to reduce inflammation and support musculoskeletal health
  • Abhyanga (oil massage) and Swedana (steam therapy) to improve circulation and relieve pain
  • Detoxification therapies to eliminate Ama (toxins)
  • Dietary and lifestyle modifications to restore dosha balance and improve mental well-being

I had a skin rash on my leg for a long time and used different steroid creams and prescribed oral medicines, none of which worked. I was suffering for a long time. After I came to the Ayurveda clinic, Dr. Sumudu Perera treated me with herbal medicine, and I finally got better. You have to ensure you follow the doctor's instructions, and with patience, you will feel better and be cured. I highly recommend The Ayurvedic clinic for any concerns you may have. Not only do they provide clean and natural remedies the whole atmosphere in the clinic is tranquil and supportive

I had an online consultation and my experience was okay. I met with the Dr, the appointment felt rushed and didn't go into depth. There was very little education on ayuverda. I was told that I needed to follow a nutrition sheet which was a bit complicated it would have been better to get a daily or weekly meal plan. I did have to chase the meal plan as it wasn't sent on the same day.

Where can I begin? I used to live in constant pain every single day due to my back condition. I relied on a walking stick just to get around, and even simple movements were a struggle. Today, I’m moving like a normal person again—and it’s all thanks to the incredible team here. From the very first visit, I was met with professionalism and genuine care. The receptionists, the doctors, everyone made me feel seen, heard, and supported. They didn’t just treat my symptoms, they focused on my overall wellbeing. My treatment plan was comprehensive. I was prescribed medicine that worked like magic, though it took some time, around the second month is when I began to notice a real difference. Along with that, my diet was adjusted to reduce inflammation, I attended pain management sessions, and I also underwent Panchakarma therapy. Each element played a role in my recovery and continues to support my health. I still attend monthly sessions because they help keep my whole body balanced and healthy. This isn't just a clinic—it's a place where healing truly happens. If you're suffering and unsure of the next step, I can’t recommend this place enough. With commitment, trust, and the support of this amazing team, it is possible to feel whole again. Thank you,

I do not know where to start, from the amazing and warm hearted team, to the efficiently of how they work and the knowledge they hold it's outstanding. I have done so many therapies and some have worked for some problems but one thing I could not heal was fatigue and as a result this lead to mental health issues migraines, a list of issues. Nightmare and dreams every night I was exhausted from no quality sleep. Within a few days my sleep has massively improved and the nightmares so far over the month reduced to 1. I remember 1 dream a night and don't wake up like I've been on a night shift. I wake up much easier and not so much of a light sleeper. By 11pm on some days and always by 2pm I would be exhausted and struggling to go on the school run. I struggled to get jobs completed due to the tiredness and forget to do things due to the same thing. Now I have energy all day until I go to bed. I'm more productive and living my life instead of surviving it. Thank you to all the team and students who have changed my life . Much love and gratitude 🙏
